Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio became as messy on the pitch as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or imploding.

The Youngster's Surprising Comeback

At least one man continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He was on last season at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He signed in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
