Watkins Possesses the Advantage - But Calvert-Lewin Could Still Secure the World Cup

Only one goal in his first ten top-flight outings this campaign had numerous wondering whether Dominic Calvert-Lewin's prime were over.

But, a just four weeks afterwards, he has become the hottest striker in England after netting 7 goals in 6 back-to-back games.

His most recent finish, in a 1-1 draw versus Sunderland, brought his tally to eight, establishing him as the highest English goalscorer in the Premier League this term.

An Impressive Revival

The 28-year-old joined Leeds United on a free transfer in the summer, after a nine-year period with Everton that was hampered by injuries in its latter stages.

However, the numbers supporting his comeback in Daniel Farke's new counter-attacking 3-5-2 system are truly impressive.

His six-game scoring streak sees him in exclusive company as only the 11th English player to score in six or more straight Premier League outings.

To put that into perspective, even England captain Harry Kane did not achieve a run this long - his best is two individual five-match streaks.

And the sole English striker to outdo Calvert-Lewin in the modern era is Jamie Vardy, who went on an eight-game scoring spree for Leicester City in 2019.

The Secret to the Purple Patch?

What is behind Calvert-Lewin so difficult to stop in recent weeks? A latest opponent's manager summed it up perfectly.
